Auto-trol Introduces ViewCaster, A Powerful Front-end for its Tech Illustrator for Windows NT® Product Family

ViewCaster Application Provides Direct Access to 3D Solids and Surface Design Data for TI and Third Party Products

Auto-trol Technology today announced that its ViewCaster application is now available for customer shipment. The application provides direct access to 3D modeling data from Tech Illustrator, Auto-trol's robust technical illustration software. Based on an industry leading object-oriented 3D geometric modeling engine, ViewCaster separately represents the geometry (detailed shape) from the topology (connectivity) of model objects. Another powerful ViewCaster feature is its healing technology, which allows technical illustrators to mend model discrepancies by detecting and correcting a vast percentage of tolerance inaccuracies in the model's geometry. ViewCaster also features hidden line removal, which enables illustrators to bypass traditional wireframe cleanup and proceed directly to rendering, annotating, and composing their illustrations. ViewCaster handles drawing import through IGES and SAT gateways. Planned future releases will support direct gateways for other native CAD formats in addition to CGM export.

In keeping with its history of market-leading product development in the electronic publishing industry, Auto-trol's latest offering combines ease-of-use with a powerful feature set designed to save time and improve quality throughout the technical illustration process. "ViewCaster facilitates the collaboration between product engineering and product documentation, and provides a true productivity tool for companies," said Jeff Courtney, Director of Research & Development. "We are excited to add ViewCaster to our already strong suite of technical illustration products."

Tim Horsch, Tech Illustrator Product Manager, also sees ViewCaster as a strategic complement to Auto-trol's strong electronic publishing product line and an integral tool for today's global businesses. Horsch said, "The batch processing capability of ViewCaster will make it the production workhorse of the technical illustration industry and completes Auto-trol's electronic publishing trilogy, which includes Tech Illustrator and our WebCGM Hotspot Plug-in products. It fills a niche in the process of moving engineering modeling data to the publishing environment and to the web."

Auto-trol proactively participates in both the CGM Open Consortium and TICC's ATA-2100 CGM Graphics Working Group, and has long supported open standards in electronic publishing environments. In October 2000, Auto-trol released its WebCGM Hotspot Plug-in for Tech Illustrator, which enables the authoring of hotspots for export to CGMs that comply with the W3C WebCGM Profile.
